Budget wise:
Visiting restaurants for lunch instead of dinner is a great way to sample local
cuisine on a budget. Ask locals for
suggestions on everything from restaurants to activities and you will usually
avoid the tourist traps and enjoy a more local flavor.
Carry snacks. Having some snacks like granola bars, trail mix or even fresh
fruit along can help save a lot over buying them from street vendors and
convenience stores.
If you're traveling by car, stock up on bottled water and other drinks at the
supermarket or discount store. A six-pack here will often cost the equivalent or
even less than the price of a single bottle from a convenience store or street
vendor.
Drink water with meals. Soft drinks, coffees and teas can add a substantial
amount to your check. Drink free water with the meal (as long as you're in a
country that it's safe to do so). Buy soft drinks at markets instead.
When an airline announces a sale to a particular destination, chances are the
others will soon follow suit, so be on the lookout and call or click around.
Use the internet to search out last minute bargain weekend fares. Most airlines'
websites have a place where drastically reduced weekend fares are available.
Start checking on Wednesday for the weekend ahead.
When flying in the US, some of the least expensive flights are available on the
smaller airlines which are subsidiaries the major airlines, for instance Delta
Express and Metro-Jet.
We have found that visiting National and State Parks are a great way to explore
and enjoy vacations. They are usually free or very inexpensive and are full of
activities and history. See the links below for state park listings. National

Safety wise:
Try to look as if you know where you are going, this may not be so easy if it is
the first time you have visited the area, but try to look confident as IF you
know where you are going. Carrying maps around looking perplexed, and stopping
to look at monuments or buildings, obviously shows that you are from out of
town, and may attract the wrong type
of attention.
Do NOT pull large amounts of cash out of your pocket. This will catch attention,
no matter where you are.
Do NOT accept drinks from anybody that you have just met, especially if in
dubious surroundings or do not know, they could be laced with any type of
concoction.
If you carry a wallet it may be wise to carry it in your front pocket.
